TALENTED young batsman Kieran Rees and experienced bowler Phil Knight are our Evening News/Fearnley Factory Shop Cricketers of the Week.

Seventeen-year-old Rees took the batting prize after a run-filled week at club and county level.

And a haul of 6-25 for Worcester seconds was enough to land left-arm seamer Knight the bowling award.

Rees scored two centuries to help Worcester Nomads U17s retain the Worcestershire title and Ryan Birt Memorial Trophy, scoring 106no against Barnards Green in the semi-final and 115 in the final against Himley.

He also hit 93 for the county U17s against Huntingdonshire at Malvern, and made 51 on his U21 debut against Herefordshire at Colwall.

The Droitwich Spa High School student, who lives in Worcester, has been with Nomads since the age of nine, but now plays his adult cricket for Birmingham League leaders Barnt Green.

His father Nigel said: "He has been in Barnt Green's first team for most of this season and feels that has improved his game.

"He has been in really good form and Richard Illingworth, who plays alongside him at Barnt Green, has been a big inspiration to him, not only with coaching but helping him with the mental side of the game."

Knight bowled five batsmen and had one caught behind to help skittle Wroxeter and Uppington for just 54 in a Birmingham League game and keep Worcester on top of the table.

The 38-year-old, who has also played for Nomads and the old Worcester City club, said: "I have been bowling well all year. I have had two or three six-wicket hauls and a couple of fives.

"I switched to bowling round the wicket and used a little bit of experience and put the ball in the right place."

Both players win £30 vouchers to be spent at the Fearnley Factory Shop cricket equipment specialists at Unit 10 Sherriff Street, Worcester.
