A THIEF has been warned by a judge that if he carries out another violent assault he could be given a life sentence.

David Woodward, who pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, has already served a sentence of five years for robbery and having an offensive weapon.

Woodward, 24, of Baskerville Road, Kidderminster, was sentenced to nine months to follow on a six-month sentence imposed by Kidderminster magistrates last month for theft.

Judge Michael Mott told him at Worcester Crown Court: "You will be extremely foolish to get yourself in any situation involving violence."

Woodward was arrested after he attacked a friend, Stuart Sleigh, as they walked in Worcester Road, Kidderminster, on April 18, said Jasbir Mann, prosecuting.

Both had recently injected themselves with heroin and Woodward's mood suddenly changed and he punched Mr Sleigh in the face. He suffered serious bruising and cuts.

Pardeep Tiwana, defending, said both men were desperate for drugs and the dispute had arisen after a friendly girl had given them £10.

Woodward intended to move out of the area when he was released, he added.
