CYCLING: Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club's Liam Preece won the Wolverhampton Wheelers U-16s circuit series at Lilleshall on Saturday.

The National Schools Time Trial champion from Stourport followed his good performance with a superb display in the road race over 12.5 miles.

Preece won all the intermediate primes and on a tight, partly waterlogged 300m circuit he nearly fell off on the last corner when at the front of the bunch.

But the teenager, who competes in the Youth Tour of Ireland this weekend against an international field, managed to stay upright and held on for third place.

A strong contingent from Wyre Forest competed in the Evesham and District Wheelers CC 25-mile time trial at Broadway on Sunday.

Preece was again the quickest club rider, winning the junior competition and taking seventh place overall in 59 minutes 18 seconds.

Tony Richardson was ninth in one hour 0-5 for second place in the over-50s category.

John Callaghan was third in the over-50s in 1-01-13, while Howard Jones recorded 1-03-1, Chris Poole 1-06-58 and Richard Pedersen a personal best of 1-08-34.

In the club time trial competition, James Smith took his first win of the season on the 14-mile course at Astley in 39-6.

Smith was followed by Ceri Brown in 39-36, Brian Clarke 39-56, Pedersen with a season's best 41-21, Mick Gray 47-55 and Mike Nicol 50-29.
