RISING late night disorder in Evesham has prompted police to bring in reinforcements from Worcester and Droitwich.

The move is part of a high visibility crackdown on loutish behaviour from who have drunk too much.

Insp Steve Brooker told town councillors that disorder was reducing over the southern division, except in Evesham.

"The cases of disorder are actually going down but Evesham is an exception," said Insp Brooker, the geographic commander for Wychavon.

"We have now set in motion an extensive plan starting next week, to make personal visits to the licensees with some high profile visible policing."

At the meeting he told councillors it was also planned to call on officers from Worcester and Droitwich to help deal with anti-social behaviour. He said that late weekend nights were peak times for fighting.

"I haven't got a downer on licensees but the people we have to deal with have clearly been sold too much alcohol," said Insp Brooker.

He added many revellers wander into busy roads and become aggressive when approached and said that recently a policewoman was injured while making an arrest.

Sgt Paul Crumpton announced an increase in police for the town, and a new van containing a CCTV camera to monitor anti-social behaviour.

"We are also expecting three more staff, and for the first time in years we are going to have probationers in Evesham, which will also help us police the patch," said Sgt Crumpton.

A spokesman for the Evesham nightclub Innuendo said it would help the police, but insisted it was strict on drunken behaviour.

"We get the blame for anyone walking around the streets at night drunk, but our security staff won't let them in," he said.

Mayor of Evesham, Coun Pat Clifford, said townspeople would welcome the increased police presence.

"We have complaints, especially from the elderly, about rowdy behaviour," she said.
