EVER since I read the first letter about cyclists being a nuisance along the canal, I have been fuming.

Why bother to flatten miles of the towpath to make a pleasant place to go fishing, cycling or walking, if some misery is going to complain?

Firstly, it is very wide now, so there is more than enough room for cyclists to pass walkers without causing any hassle to them.

Secondly, on a regular basis at the end of the week, myself, my husband and a couple of friends, cycle along to the Bird-in-Hand pub, where we enjoy a meal and a couple of drinks, then cycle back home in the warm evening air.

The canal, with all the trees and wild flowers, is picturesque and tranquil.

Everyone you meet says "hello", and this gives me a wonderful feeling of well-being. And I deserve it. I am stuck at work all week, and this is better than any anti-depressant. I recommend doing this to everyone, it is lovely.

Last of all, cycling on the road is so frightening. Some motorists still show no consideration, and they cut in far too closely.

So what I suggest is, if you feel down and fed up, get on your bike and enjoy our wonderful canal.

If you don't like people on bikes, I suggest you stay away.

The people who worked so hard at flattening and widening the towpath deserve a big "thank you" as they did a great job.
