I WAS very interested in the two correspondents who bemoaned the "hidden" 30mph speed limit that applies to the busy single carriageway of Birchfield Road in the heart of built-up Redditch. (Letters, July 23)

As one writes, "Indeed, there is not even a single sign telling drivers what the speed limit is. Not one in all that length of road."

It's a fair point. I regularly rob banks. Imagine my shock when I was recently arrested. As I pointed out to the policeman, there are no signs outside banks telling me I shouldn't break in.

Perhaps motorists should be tested on such things as speed limits before they take to the road. What about a series of driving lessons for each driver culminating in a test?

Then, maybe, a licence to drive could be issued.

This probably sounds daft - call me a mad fool - but what about publishing a cheap, easy-to-read code to highway use?

It could be called the Code of the Highway or something similar.
