DAVID Leatherdale is in line for an unexpected return to Frizzell County Championship division two action for table-topping Worcestershire ag-ainst Glamorgan at New Road tomorrow.

The all-rounder, who has played in just two Championship games so far this season, is likely to replace Andrew Hall who has been drafted into the South African squad for tomorrow's second Test against England at Lord's.

Hall, who celebrates his 28th birthday tomorrow, has been called up due to the continued absence of Jacques Kallis, who has decided to spend more time in South Africa with his grieving family after the funeral of his father, Henry.

The County, however, are waiting for clarification from the ECB to see if they can field a replacement in the event of Hall being available if he's not included in the tourists' side.

New Road director of cricket Tom Moody explained: "We just want to know whether we can have a replacement starting the game."

Meanwhile, the County's chief executive Mark Newton is expecting the wicket for the forthcoming match to come under scrutiny after Worcestershire's last two home Championship games against Derbyshire and Dur-ham attracted the attention of ECB pitch liaison officer John Jameson.

He was sent to New Road after 18 wickets fell on the first day against Durham and was also present when 16 tumbled on the opening day against Derbyshire. On both occasions no further action was taken.

Newton said: "I've got no doubt that the pitch will come under scrutiny. It has been unfortunate because we made big steps forward last year.

"We are already scheduled to do some radical work on the square at the end of the season. We have taken a lot of advice and I can assure you all of us desperately want to make the pitches better."
