FORMER Liverpool and West Brom favourite David Burrows is on his way to Studley FC.

The 35-year-old, best known for his honours with Liverpool, had a look around the club yesterday and was set to make his debut for the Bees against Halesowen Town in last night's pre-season friendly.

The Dudley-born defender has had more than a decade in the top flight and has known Studley player-coach Nicky Cross for a number of years.

Cross said: "I've known David a long time and he's moving to France and he could be tying up some loose ends for a few of weeks.

"He mentioned to me that it would be nice to have a few games before he goes and I asked him to come down and have a look around.

"He's not a young lad and he'll take his time before he makes a decision but it's still very encouraging for us."

A 20-year-old Burrows cost Liverpool £500,000 from the Baggies in 1988 and almost scored on his debut against Millwall.

His football highlight came in the 1989/90 season when the player knicknamed Bugsy won the league title with the Anfield giants.

But Burrows days at Anfield were shortened with the arrival of boss Graeme Souness who swapped him and team mate Mike Marsh in a deal with West Ham for Julian Dicks.

The defender, an England U21 international, also had spells with Everton, Coventry City and Birmingham City before ending last season with Sheffield Wednesday.

Studley manager Mark Chambers has also added teenage midfielder Adam Blake to his side for the new season.

The 17-year-old impressed the Bees boss with solid displays against Dr Martens League sides Stourport and Redditch United prompting Chambers to predict a promising future for the youngster.

"He is only young but keeps the ball very well," the manager said. "He is an assured player and although ours is a competitive league, he is more than capable of playing at this level.

"He feels at home at Studley and enjoys playing football here. But we are not going to rush him or place any pressure on him - he is certainly one for the future."

Chambers expects to have midfielders Mark Neath and Mark Beddowes together with striker Mark Crisp back in contention for the clash with Rovers and Saturday's trip to Bedworth United.

And with two tough games in three days he plans to keep substitutions to a minimum in a bid to raise fitness levels.

"Some players are behind with training so it is important to get everyone up to the same level."
