A KIND-HEARTED family man is walking from Worcester to Bromsgrove to raise enough money for his niece's operation.

Ray Asakereh visited his sister in Iran at Christmas, only to find her daughter, 21-year-old Mahtab, was still taking pain-killing injections for a serious kidney infection.

But the 54-year-old from St Peter's, Worcester, discovered the cost of paying surgeons to cure her re-occurring problem would amount to £1,000.

Realising a good working wage in Iran is the equivalent to around £45 a month, he knew it was a figure the family could never afford.

After the poignant visit Ray knew he had to do something, but realised he couldn't stump up all the cash on his own.

Trainers

He instead decided to raise part of the money through a sponsored walk and he donned his trainers to begin preparations for the 15-mile challenge.

Individuals, his bosses at Niagra Blinds and Marl Bank Sheet Metal, Worcester, have all chipped in to the tune of £600 to back him in his walk, due to take place today.

Former Worcester City player and work colleague Terry Awford will also be following Ray in his car, to back him up and to be an adjudicator for the challenge.

"My niece has been suffering so much and this operation would mean so much towards her quality of life. She always has to take tablets and injections to stop her pain," said Mr Asakereh.

"I realised I couldn't afford all of the money which was needed and the support I've received from everyone has been wonderful."
