AN accident dubbed "a warning to cyclists" was reported in the Malvern News a hundred years ago.

Described as a "mishap of a somewhat alarming nature", the accident happened when a cyclist coming down Church Street from town hit a carriage, which was crossing from Victoria Road to Priory Road.

"The cyclist, whose name was Bridges, is said to have been riding at a very fast pace, and apparently took no precautions on nearing the point where the roads meet.

"His machine ran against the pole of the carriage with such violence that the pole was snapped in two, and the rider was pitched on to the pavement and rendered unconscious," the newspaper reported.

The horses pulling the carriage nearly got out of control, until the coachman and passers-by calmed them down, allowing the passengers out.

The cyclist Bridges was taken to Dr Charley and after a while, recovered and was taken home," reported the paper.
