COUNCIL chiefs are heading for a battle with supermarket giant Tesco over the opening times of its St Peter's store, in Worcester.

Store managers want to open 24 hours a day but - despite receiving only five objections - planning committee members are considering refusing permission.

They will watch video evidence gathered by a St Peter's resident before deciding.

The store was given temporary permission to open all day a year ago, but chief planning officer Peter Yates told yesterday's meeting that Tesco wanted to make that permanent.

Police had no objection and had not noticed any crime rise since the temporary measure was granted.

The city's environmental health department did not object either, because the noise generated by the extra night traffic was low-level.

But Michael Gleaves, of Kingfisher Close, said engines left running on delivery lorries often parked outside the store at night were costing him sleep.

"I've made dozens of complaints," he said. "I want a reasonable quality of life, which my family doesn't get at the moment."

He said he had 100 hours of video evidence of the extra noise and disturbance since the switch to all-day opening.

Coun Mike Layland said members should ask themselves if they would like to live there.

"I'm not prepared to vote for something I wouldn't like," he said.

But Coun Geoff Williams said there did not seem to have been much increase in traffic or noise since the opening hours were extended.

"I'm not convinced that we should refuse this application," he said.
