IT WAS not a good weekend for Cookley as both village teams suffered defeats in Worcestershire League Division Two.

Struggling Cookley firsts were well beaten at runaway leaders Brockhampton who have been invincible after a number of signings including pace bowler Sirhander Malik.

Brockhampton posted a formidable 291-9 with Adam Nicholls the pick of the Cookley bowlers with 5-99.

In reply, the villagers looked to have established a reasonable platform at 66-1, thanks to Gary Field (17) and veteran Phil Dixon who finished with a bruised 47.

But the middle order collapsed against the searing pace of Malik, who has reputedly played for Pakistan A, and they were all out for just 104.

Skipper Nicholls admitted: "While it was an experience to play against someone who can bowl at over 80mph, it was not one we would rush to repeat!"

Dogged batting by Paul Cartwright (80) and Gav Brown saw Cookley through to 210 but the total was never going to be enough on an excellent batting surface.

Brockhampton always looked favourites to get home but made heavy weather of things and lost eight wickets in the process.

Gary Mills took 4-58 but Cookley, who have slipped to third in the table, should have done better with half-a-dozen front-line bowlers in their line-up.
