BATSMAN of the week James Mills has admitted his century in Old Vigornians' weekend winning draw was long overdue.

The 34-year-old moved back to Worcestershire two years ago after work commitments took him to London but has failed to notch even a 50 on his return to cricket.

Mills has played a dozen matches for OVs in that time but readily admits that the ton, including 19 fours and six sixes, was a long time coming.

"I suppose you could say it's long overdue," he joked. "I've been making starts but never really gone on. Maybe it's overconfidence, I don't know. I was just delighted to make the score on Saturday because it really boosts the confidence."

The Worcestershire Crusader League Division Four clash between Coombs Wood and Ovs proved to be a real thriller with both sides going for victory. The visitors, spearheaded by Mills' 144, set a target of 293-8 before Coombs Wood finished on 281-7 in reply.

Mills, normally a middle-order batsman, believes that a switch to opener could have made all the difference as he began to smack the ball to all parts of the park.

"It was quite a small ground and because I was opening, it gave me a bit more time," he added.

"I had a bit of luck which you obviously need. I wasn't dropped but I hit a few straight drives that they got a hand to. Luckily, though, it was my day. You know when it's your day you've got to make the most of it!"

Meanwhile Rushwick bowler Tony Douglas, 29, recorded his ever figures in the first XI to claim 7-44 and help his side beat Worcester Dominies by three wickets in Division Three of the Crusader Worcestershire League.

Both players win £30 vouchers to be spent at the Fearnley Factory Shop in Sherriff Street, Worcester. Nominations to reach us by 12 noon on Tuesday.
