CYCLING: Kidderminster rider Warren King clinched overall victory in the Birmingham Cycling Club's two-day stage race at Beoley, Redditch.

In the opening time trial on Saturday, the Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club competitor came seventh and followed it up with a ninth place in the first road race stage.

On Sunday, King won the final road stage with a winning margin of four seconds which gave him the overall win.

He continued his good form in the John Andrew Memorial road race when he chased out of a fast-moving bunch and tried to catch a breakaway rider.

Unable to catch his man, he managed to hold off the bunch for second place.

King is hoping for a good performance in the Firemans' World Championship event at Lake Garda, Italy, in September.

Other club riders enjoyed success at the weekend, especially Phil Blacker.

Blacker was in superb form on Sunday to take overall victory in the 58km Darley Moor Circuit Race at Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Another fireman, Blacker works with King at Bromsgrove and is also hoping for a good ride in Italy.

Steve Burns took third place at Leamington C and AC 10-mile time trial at Offchurch on Saturday in 21 minutes 56 seconds.

Burns was followed, seven seconds behind, by Ian Smith and the overall winner was Keith Murray, of Science in Sport.com, in 20-55.

Tony Richardson managed an excellent seventh in the Dursley RC 25-mile time trial at Thornbury in one hour-01-41, behind overall winner Gavin Pardoe, of Stourbridge CC, in 55-40.
