I WRITE in reference to Roy Calvert's intention to challenge the speed camera partnership over his alleged breaking of the 30 limit.

The country has become, grudgingly as a whole, used to the ubiquitous speed camera, often believing it to be a genuine artefact in an attempt to improve road safety.

Perhaps in some instances they are a deterrent to excessive speed at known accident black spots.

But all too often, they are positioned in such a way as to create the maximum income from fines for the minimum involvement in manpower.

A case for example is the 3,600 motorists caught over a two-week period on the M1 at J15 through temporary road works.

Most were probably filing through following the leader at 60mph and I'll wager none caused an accident. Yet now they have contributed a minimum of £216,000 in fines.

How many burglars, rapists and muggers would the Northants boys in blue have caught during that same period, I wonder?

Mr Calvert's clean driving record alone should have this case thrown out. All power to him for challenging the faceless machinery that law enforcement has become.
