A BROMSGROVE high jumper has leapt to new heights by winning the silver medal at a national championship.

Laura Davis, from the Mount School, in Birmingham Road, cleared 1.28 metres to finish second while representing the Midlands at the Independent Schools Association National Athletics Championships at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium.

The 11-year-old could even have made it a gold medal after being pushed into second by virtue having failed at a lower height more times than the winner.

Laura reached the finals on Wednesday, June 25, by finishing runner-up at the Midlands area event earlier this year, again after failing more times at a lower height.

And she only got the chance to compete in Birmingham after the Midlands winner pulled out at the last minute, promoting Laura from reserve to competitor.

PE teacher at the Mount School, Doug Newman, said: "She has done superbly well. She only had about three practises at it so she's done really well."
