DROITWICH Spa MP Peter Luff was in the triple death Evesham train crash.

The Tory MP was among passengers on Monday's Great Western inter-city train which ploughed into a mini bus on an unmanned level crossing. He escaped unscathed.

The Mid-Worcestershire representative has since demanded closer scrutiny on 'gangmaster labour' on local farms - after it emerged the fated vehicle had been carrying labourers, believed to be Iraqis.

Three of the eight bus passengers died and others were injured. A train passenger also received slight injuries.

Mr Luff also wants tighter licensing for mini-buses.

"Everyone coped with this tragedy magnificently - from the train driver who stopped the train so quickly to the paramedic who talked to the Iraqi survivors in Arabic," he told the Advertiser.

"Questions that must now be asked are likely to focus on the warnings and training provided to people using unmanned crossings."

And he said that reputable employers of casual labour - the so called gangmasters - have voiced concern that some foreign workers do not have the documentation for driving or working in the UK.

"Whatever the result of the inquiry, I hope it will focus attention on the need to drive up standards in the gangmaster business," he added.
