BUDDING pop stars from a Spa high school stretched their vocal chords recently for a unique rendition of Pop Idols.

Twenty-three students from Droitwich Spa High School, in Briar Mill, took part in the finals held at Huntington Hall, Worcester, on Monday, June 30.

The students, registered into three categories of solo, ensemble and best key stage three group, delivered a musical extravaganza to the panel of judges who attended to give their professional advice.

Like the popular TV series, huge interest was generated and the number of contestants had been slimmed down in previous weeks.

Head of music Kevin Dowson said: "It is difficult to tell some students that they haven't made it through to the final, but there is simply not enough time to accommodate all the acts that started out two months ago."

Pop Idols is one of the many musical and theatrical ventures at Droitwich Spa High School and although the contest has only been running for two years at the school it has already found a special place with the students.

Mr Dowson added: "On the night we had a specialist male and female staff ensemble and one of our former students Tim Jones came along who is now carving out a successful career for himself in the music industry.

"This year's event was better than ever and the judges commented on the stunning quality and professionalism of the students."
