A DRUG addict who raided Droitwich houses to fund a £100 a day heroin addiction has been jailed for 18 months.

Adam Harrison stole goods worth over £4,000 which included a computer, a DVD player and a stereo system.

But he and an accomplice were spotted by an employee of a wine store carrying part of a haul down the street. Harrison also left fingerprints at the scene of both raids.

An attempt by his barrister Abigail Nixon to get the case adjourned for him to be assessed for a drug treatment and testing order failed.

Judge Andrew Geddes said it was clear that community penalties were not practical after hearing how the defendant had twice breached them.

He told 24-year-old Harrison of Westmead Close, Droitwich, that burglary caused great distress to householders.

Glyn Samuel, prosecuting, said the first break-in occurred on April 29 in St Peter's Walk when goods to the value of £601 were taken.

A few days later, Harrison and a friend went on another house raid in the town, netting goods worth £3,703.

An employee at Victoria Wines saw them carrying part of their haul past her shop around 11pm.

Police arrested both men on May 8. Harrison admitted he needed to fund his drug habit.

Miss Nixon said he had reduced the cost of his addiction from £100 a day to £20 a day.

He had been unable to get professional help to kick the habit and felt safer if he was locked up.

But she said Harrison was ashamed of his offending because it put his father, who was waiting for a kidney transplant, under stress.

The court heard that the other man was dealt with at an earlier date and was jailed for 23 months for ten raids.
