RICHARD Lewis's hopes of a dream return to his home club of Royal St George's were dashed in regional qualifying for the British Open.

The Worcestershire Golf Club professional, formerly an assistant at Sandwich, missed out at Trentham yesterday with a 75. Despite a flurry of seven birdies in his last 10 holes, an opening front nine of 42 scuppered his chances of making final qualifying.

"It's only the fifth round of golf I've played this year so I have not had the chance to prepare all that well," said Lewis.

Meanwhile, Bransford golfer John Hems suffered a nightmare finish at Trentham. Two under par with four to play. Hems racked up two triple bogeys and two double bogeys to drop 10 shots for an 80.

"I didn't hit a bad shot but three shots on the bounce were bad luck," said Hems.

Also missing out at Trentham were Scott Fordyce (Bransford), Dan Clee (Wharton Park), Will Grey (Bewdley Pines) and Keith Preece (Burghill Valley), while James Cox (Worcestershire), James Wright (Droitwich) were unsuccessful at Minchinhampton.
