Quite a sensation was caused at Headless Cross on Sunday from the fact that Mary Alice Tovey, aged 40, wife of William Henry Tovey, landlord of the Bell Inn, Headless Cross, committed suicide in a determined manner, the discovery being made under very painful circumstances.
About ten minutes after one o'clock deceased's son, aged 11, went into the kitchen and was horrified to find his mother hanging by a short piece of rope which was attached to a nail on the wall.
His father was at the time serving in the bar but with all possible speed Mrs Tovey was cut down and Dr Peirce who was passing at the time was called in but could only pronounce life extinct.
