MISS Kathleen Mary Duggins, an Alcester businesswoman, became the first woman special constable in Alcester district when she took an oath in Alcester Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Miss Duggins, who owns a florists and fruiterers in Alcester, will be no stranger to the duties which she will be called upon to perform because she was formerly a member of the Women's Auxiliary Police Force for four years during the war.

She is keenly interested in police work and for that reason withdrew from the Alcester division of the Civil Defence Service.

Her grandfather, late Mr RH Webb was a magistrate at Stratford-upon-Avon for many years.
