THE tone of the speeches at the special meeting of the district council heard on Friday of last week to consider the resolutions passed at the public meeting of ratepayers and property owners was as pacificatory as the previous meeting.

Some of the members evidently regarded the proposed public meeting as a pleasant little joke and one or two facetiously said they thought the members of the council ought to attend or there would be no one there.

Then came the packed public meeting, one of the most enthusiastic ever held in the town, and hey presto! What a change! The members of the council almost tumbled over each other in their anxiety to assure the ratepayers how desirous they were to work to their wishes.
