KING'S School Worcester is celebrating its first ever success at the Henley Royal Regatta.

A combined King's and Marlow Rowing Club crew won the Fawley Cup for junior quadruple sculls in yesterday's final day of competition.

The crew, featuring King's student Zac Purchase at stroke, beat Malvern Preparatory School from the United States easily in the final, in a time of six minutes 55 seconds.

Previously they rowed over against St Peter's School in the quarter-finals before defeating a combined Anglican Church School/St Joseph's College crew from Australia by 3 lengths in the semi-finals in 6.49.

King's rowing master Nick Maloney said: "It's a great honour and we are delighted for Zac."

Purchase is one of four King's pupils attending Great Britain trials this week, the others being Myles McKinnon, Nick Thomas-Peter and Harry Denlegh-Maxwell, while Ava Goodman has won a place in the GB girls' four.

Kings' 'A' crew had gone out of the competition in the last 16.

Worcester Rowing Club's hopes of regaining the Wyfold Cup for coxless fours, which they won in 2000, ended at the semi-final stage when they lost by 4 lengths to the Army.
