VOLLEYBALL: Cleobury Mortimer men ended their West Midlands League season with yet another home defeat despite their impressive destruction of Tamworth just two weeks ago.

But the inconsistent village side remain in Division One after losing 3-1 to Telford who are ironically relegated.

The match was a close affair with all the sets won by the minimum two points and though Cleobury looked the more polished, their defence let them down.

They did offer impressive shot variation at the hands of prime setter Adam Bills, while Carl Brookes and player-of-the-day Mike Childes won good points.

Brookes used power and Childes intelligent cut shots but their hard work was squandered by a run of two or three silly unforced errors.

In the second set, Cleobury held onto a slender advantage with the help of effective fast attack from Simon Eades and Simon Fish on the wing.

Jim Childes played his usual sublime libero game, guiding the home side to a consolation set.

There is no West Midlands silverware in their trophy cabinet for the first time in two years.

Coach Lynsey Rankin remains upbeat as an improvement in individual displays, especially from Bills, could bode well for next season.
