FIREFIGHTERS were called out to deal with a car fire in a DIY superstore car park.

The Vauxhall Astra had been abandoned and left on its roof in the Homebase car park in Hylton Road.

It was still burning when the fire crew arrived at the scene, at 11.40pm on Tuesday evening.

Two hose reels and two firefighters using breathing apparatus fought to bring the blaze under control.

The Evening News reported last year that the car park was being plagued by teenage hooligans in cars. The youths meet on the private site because they are immune from police intervention.

The car park has been used as a racetrack for the gangs, but no solution has been found because the site is shared by Homebase and McDonald's.

The DIY company said it wanted to use barriers to stop the louts from entering the car park at night, but said McDonald's would not take responsibility for closing them.

McDonald's wanted the company to redesign the car park to solve the problem.
