SECURITY camera footage of a 20-year-old Worcester man carrying out a "nasty" assault on a student was shown at a sentencing hearing at Worcester Magistrates Court.

John Bateman, of Carlisle Road, Ronkswood, was yesterday ordered to pay £150 compensation to Nicholas Jones, who suffered cuts and bruises to his face and body.

Bateman also received a community punishment order for nine months to address his "problem" with anger management and alcohol.

Mark Soper, prosecuting, told the court the attack, which took place on Tuesday, May 27 after a night out at Images nightclub on The Butts, Worcester, left the student with a cut to his left cheek and bruises to his shoulders.

He told the court that Mr Jones had struck up a brief conversation with two girls in the club, which continued later on outside.

Louise Tyler, defending, said Bateman, who pleaded guilty to the attack at a previous appearance, believed Mr Jones was harassing the girls.

Mrs Tyler said a community punishment order was the most productive means to deal with her client.
