Malvern College's lunchtime concert made a welcome interlude when its Jazz Band swung into 'Stompin' at the Savoy', featuring a vigorous solo drum episode.

Then, with a change of mood, came a smoochy rendering of Sea of Love, a solo saxophone intensifying the moment.

The Jazz Band's instrumental blend of saxophones, brass, drums, keyboard, guitar and a first rate pianist was high quality indeed. Two young organists performed solos. Lento by Bridge was sustained, and low pedals were used to effect by Gregory Swinford, and Edward Nesbit played Brahms's O Gott, du frommer Gott with assurance.

Purcell's Chaconne was given a sophisticated reading by the Chamber Orchestra, directed by Stephen McDade. Cellists gave a very clear lead as the tempo changed, and the orchestra's closing phrases were beautifully soft.

The Jazz Band's finale Yesterday, the melody always to the fore, then Five foot two, eyes of blue and Rock around the Clock, exuding punchy rhythm to the obvious enjoyment of students and conductor Stephen Spanyol - the audience too - concluded a pleasant hour.

This platform which npower provides in supporting school pupils in lunchtime concerts is most valuable, giving them the opportunity to perform to the public, and the public the chance to witness the excellent work done in schools.
