BEWDLEY claimed a Worcestershire League Division Two winning draw over their Wyre Forest rivals Cookley.

In an enjoyable game played in miserable weather, Bewdley managed 185-7 with Simon Mauger scoring 54 and Paul Edwards 44.

Despite an early setback, Cookley recovered and needed 15 off 12 balls to win.

The run-out of skipper, former Stourport Swifts footballer Adam Nicholls (57), proved crucial though and the villagers had to settle for a losing draw at 174-9.

Bewdley 185-7, Cookley 174-9.

Cookley took the honours in the seconds' match with an eight-wicket victory on a damp and slow track to hit the top of the table.

Batting first, Bewdley skipper David Jones played steadily throughout the innings for 78 not out but had little support until Mike Harris (23 not out) joined him.

The duo put on 59 runs before the innings closed at 150-4 with the second batting point just achieved.

Ian Goodman, returning after a year out with injury, bowled 19 tight overs and claimed a couple of wickets.

Cookley lost an early wicket to a leaping catch by wicket-keeper Cyril Ramsey.

But club chairman Phil Dixon (80no), ably supported by Martin Goode (27) and Sean Smith (27no), batted sensibly.

They cruised home to take 20 points with a couple of overs and eight wickets to spare.

Bewdley 2nds 150-4, Cookley 2nds 151-2.

Team manager Andy Parker is set to make a long awaited return for Cookley firsts against Brockhampton on Saturday but Aussie Phil Divito has left the club.

They then play the National Village Knockout Cup second round on Sunday at home to Hereford League side Garnons.

The club won their first trophy of the season by taking the tug-of-war contest at the village's May Day festivities.
