DELIGHTED Stourport Swifts manager Tim Langford paid tribute to his players after they stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a 3-0 victory at Mangotsfield United.

The win lifted Langford's side to fifth in the Dr Martens League Western Division table and boosted the spirit in the Walshes Meadow squad.

Goals from Simon Marsh, Alex Cowley and a Jan Mulders penalty wrapped up the points but, according to the boss, it could have been 8-0.

Langford said: "Since I have been in charge, that was the best all-round performance from the side.

"Apart from 15 or 20 minutes in the first half and a few minutes in the second, we totally dominated the match.

"I went on for the final 20 minutes and could have scored three - their keeper made a few good saves."

The opening goal came after just 10 minutes when a free-kick from the excellent Ian Cottrill was flicked on by Kerry Giddings and Marsh forced the ball home at the far post.

Richard Gardner almost added to the tally before the break but was denied by the first of a string of excellent Dave Dyson saves as the West Country side held out for the remainder of the half.

But two goals in seven minutes midway through the second period wrapped up the points for Swifts.

Striker Giddings fired in a cross for Cowley to turn home on 65 minutes before Mulders drilled in a penalty following a foul on Marsh.

Langford's introduction caused mayhem in the Mangotsfield defence and only the intervention of Dyson kept the tally down.

While the Swifts manager believes it too late to launch an assault on the top of the table, he admits to having an eye on promotion next season.

Langford added: "There is an excellent spirit with players playing for each other.

"The introduction of the new faces (Gardner and Cottrill) means we now have some competition for places and we can start to lay the foundations for next season."
