THE number of tramps seeking outdoor relief at Droitwich Workhouse during the past fortnight had numbered 144 compared with a more modest 84 for the same period last year. The ruling Guardians, who as always kept a very close watch on the purse strings, conclude the increase had been as a result of the great number of hop pickers who had recently crossed the county in search of work - which this year had not been plentiful.

BROMSGROVE magistrates showed their appreciation that resourceful Joseph Glover had at least attempted to make an effort when they handed him a small 2/6 (12.5p) fine for cycling from Worcester with no lights. He showed magistrates a glass globe in which he had put a lighted candle as a makeshift lamp, but which unfortunately had kept blowing out.

THERE were scenes of great joy at Bentley on Saturday when Capt Hugh Cheape, son of the lady "Squire" returned home from the South African war where he had distinguished himself on the field of battle. He had been met at Bromsgrove station by a huge crowd including members of the local aristocracy, which accompanied him all the way to the Manor house. There his wagonetten was unhitched and pulled the remainder of the way by estate staff, some of whom fired of a welcoming volley of shots.

A PUBLIC meeting was held at Charford Mission Rooms, in Bromsgrove, aimed at launching a workingmen's club in the town. It would be non-political and unsectarian and provide somewhere where members could enjoy a quiet game of cards, billiards or bagatelle. Facilities at The Institute in New Road were unsuitable, it was said, as the games room was too noisy for comfort while dead silence was maintained in the reading room, making conversation impossible.
