THERE was excitement among Finstall Women's Institute (WI) members when the opening of their meeting was recorded for the Archers world famous radio show. Programme bosses needed a typical WI meeting opening for a forthcoming episode. The women sang Jerusalem and club president Mrs Wales addressed members.

DOG lovers from Hanbury and Rubery scooped top accolades at the Ladies' Kennel Association Show, at Olympia. Mrs Dunn, of Park Hall, won a string of awards thanks to her Australian terrier Dunhall Wrasket, which she had bred herself. Solo Tiger Ray, an Airedale owned by Mr Turner, of Hollymoor, won the best breed category and achieved champion status.

RUBERY Christians were gearing up for two important anniversaries on the church calendar. The Congregational Church, in Whetty Lane, was due to mark a centenary since the declaration for congregationalism in Rubery and the silver jubilee of the opening of its building.

PARENTS were encouraged to allow their children to stay on at sixth form at Bromsgrove County High School's annual speech day. The Stourbridge Road school had 635 pupils on its register and more than 100 were in the sixth form. Prizes were given to staff and students for achievements during the school year.
