OFTEN you hear coaches say that teams didn't play well during a draw or defeat.

You don't hear it too much when you've scored 11 tries during a match! We beat Bedford Blues 69-10 on Saturday and there were some good aspects to the display. However, I think that overall we could have played much better against them and maybe given the score a rather more impressive look to it.

In general, if we analyse the technical aspects of play, we didn't do what is expected of us and it was disappointing. The coaches have made that clear and have given us quite a hard week at Sixways!

We have to be ruthless for 80 minutes. That is going to be the key to winning promotion because we just cannot afford to play in patches and be happy with that. Any player that turns around and justifies a patchy performance by the result isn't living in the real world.

If you are happy playing sporadically then really you need to take a good, long look at yourself. It will not be enough when it comes down to it. When we come to the shake-up or the big matches, you will be found out because people will take advantage of a lack of concentration.

You may have scored the 10th try of the match against a side who are just not at the races but the secret is to get back into position and do just what you did before. The worst thing the team can do is become individualistic and get away from the game plan.

That's what happened against Bedford and for the final 20 minutes of the first half we lost a lot of cohesion. If we had kept the momentum going we would have scored more than 100 points against them.

A lot of the talk has been about Rotherham's 102-point haul against Moseley and fair play to them. But we are not worried about Rotherham. We cannot do anything about them until we play them. We simply have to concentrate on our own game and keep on improving. On Saturday's evidence, there is a lot of work to be done.

The positive point to come out of the Bedford match is that we took five points for the sixth game in succession and we have 30 for the season -- the same as Rotherham. We also scored 11 tries and were able to make six changes to the side and give a few different players a run out.

I'm not sure how much rugby Bedford wanted to play on the day. They came to make it difficult for us but that's OK. That's what we will come up against week in, week out at Sixways.

It's up to us to solve the puzzles, not criticise other teams' approaches to what is obviously a difficult away match.

The great thing about Saturday is that we go away from home where teams tend to have a go at us a little more.

London Welsh will fancy their chances and we embrace that because it should be an entertaining spectacle for the supporters. Manchester was a good example of that. They played an open game and tried, at every opportunity, to score tries. At the end of the match, they had won a bonus point while Bedford came away from Sixways with nothing.

London Welsh have caught the eye this season with some very good results and we are looking forward to a good contest. They have some excellent players and the boys have told me that if it rains at Old Deer Park then the surface can be quite tricky.

It should prove to be an interesting weekend in National One with us and Rotherham both facing tough looking away fixtures. They go to Plymouth which, people say, is not the easiest place to go and win.
