100 years ago - May 31, 1902

THOMAS Oldham, a farmer of Lower Moor, was summoned under the by-laws for using indecent language at Fladbury on May 20. Defendant did not appear. PC Johnson proved service of summons and in stating the case, he said he saw the defendant on the village green with a crowd round him using very bad language. He requested him to go away and he did so, but then returned 10 minutes later still using the language. Fined 10s and 7s 6d costs.

May 28 1927

AT Merstow Green schools in Evesham a talk on Empire Day was given to the children on Friday afternoon by the Headmaster, Mr J E Smith, and on Tuesday the Union Jack was hung in a prominent position. No celebration was held, but during the opening morning service the special prayer from the Revised Prayer Book was said and the National Anthem sung.

May 31 1952

IN their first week at Chadbury Lock, the Royal Engineers from Long Marston have already carried out their most important task. By damming the mouth of the lock they have secured the level of the Avon above. They have also started to erect another dam across the exit of the lock, and they have removed hundreds of tons of silt from the upper approach.

A FORMER Mayor of Evesham will be riding into town on a tandem on Saturday afternoon. The ride is planned by Mr C H Blackwell to herald the arrival of a party of cyclists from Evesham's French twin town of Dreux. The cyclists are among a party of 240 visitors from Dreux who will be arriving for a three-day visit to officially seal the town's 25 years old friendship bond with Dreux.
