August 16 1902

The Coronation illuminations in Evesham were decidedly the best ever seen in the town, and reflected much credit on all the inhabitants. Perhaps the best display of all was on Merstow Green, where hundreds of lights were hung up among he trees round this open space. The Green was illuminated on both Friday and Saturday nights, and the Town Band played a selection of music on the former.

August 13 1927

A very successful and enjoyable garden fete in aid of church funds took place in the Vicarage grounds, Hampton, on Wednesday last. The weather was delightful and there was a large attendance. In opening the proceedings, the Vicar, the Rev D Fitzmaurice, said it had been originally intended that a big fete should have been held at Hampton House, but the disastrous frost came, and the men said it would be no use holding a fete under the circumstances.. Then, the Mothers' Union undertook the work, and the present fete was the result.

August 16 1952

A proposal by he Railway Executive to close Bengeworth Station, Hampton, was notified to Evesham Town Council on Wednesday. A letter said the British Transport Commission had been investigating the economic position of branch lines. They wanted to concentrate upon achieving the maximum economy while continuing to offer a limited passenger service between Evesham and Ashchurch, and their opinion was that Bengeworth should be closed for all purposes. Ald E.A.Andrews said there would be opposition in Hampton to the proposal.

August 18 1977

An appeal against the "no bingo" ruling at the Clifton Cinema will probably be heard next month. It was hoped that profits from bingo would enable the loss-making cinema, which opened 50 years ago, to continue showing films on non-bingo days. Evesham betting -and licensing committee turned down the bingo licence plea saying it was felt bingo was "adequately catered for" in the town.
