100 Years Ago February 28 1903

The Fire Brigade sub-committee resolved to recommend to award all present members of the Brigade who have served five years and upwards a stripe to be worn upon their uniform in recognition of their services; also to arrange that one-half of the members attend country fires in rotation, including the Captain and Engineer. Selection to be left to the Captain's discretion.. Town Clerk to arrange with the Offenham Parish Council for display by the Brigade at Offenham.

"I hate to learn the ebb of Time, From you proud steeple's drowsy chime," sang the poet, but when the old clock in the Pershore Abbey Tower ceased to function in that respect, for less than a fortnight, the townsfolk felt quite lonely, and its re-echoing sound is again most welcome. The clock, which was placed in the Tower 56 years ago, has, for the second time only since its instalment, been in the hands of the makers for cleaning and repairs.

A water diviner has "shattered all preconceived notions" about water in the Lenches, Evesham Rural District Council was told on Monday when it was reported that pumping tests at a bore hole sunk on the directions of the water diviner, Mr W Izod, of Clifford Chambers, showed a yield of 55,000 gallons a day - enough to ensure a satisfactory supply to all the Lenches villages..

The Evesham building firm of Wheeler and Mansell Ltd. has told Wychavon that it is negotiating to build a "package deal" of 43 bungalows and flats in Broadway for retired Greater London Council house tenants. The scheme was put before Wychavon planners last Thursday for information and marked confidential, but officers dropped the ban on publication when a letter from the GLC explaining the deal made no mention that the proposed development sold remain secret. Villagers at Broadway said if the proposals were implemented it will mean that young people will have to move away from the village to find somewhere else to live.
