Solihull Borough 2 Redditch United 1

Redditch United suffered a 2-1 defeat at old rivals Solihull Boro, losing recent signing Jimmy Quiggin in the process.

And it was a familiar story for Rod Brown's side, Solihull taking the points with a last minute winner.

Former Halesowen Town and Hereford United frontman Quiggin limped off eight minutes before half-time allowing Peter Sutton a chance to stake his claim for a place in the starting line-up.

Quiggin started the game as the solitary striker ahead of a five-man midfield.

But if the tactic was to stifle Boro's creativity it was a disappointing failure with the home side having two glorious chances to break the deadlock before the break.

With 17 minutes gone Mark Shepherd rose unchallenged to meet a Micky Hayde free-kick and his header scraped the foot of the Redditch upright.

And on 30 minutes the tricky Leon Thomas turned inside his marker and his fierce shot forced a good save from goalkeeper Richard Anstiss.

There was another scare early in the second half, Andy Corbett firing just wide, and within minutes, the arrival of substitute Naveed Arshad prompted a return to a more familiar 4-4-2 formation for the visitors.

Undeterred, it was Boro who broke the deadlock on 67 minutes when Morton Titterton climbed above his marker to head in a Martin Hier free-kick.

But the lead lasted little more than a minute.

Sutton headed a long clearance into the path of Arshad who was sent crashing to the floor by Solihull keeper Mark Gayle and Lee Knight made no mistake with the spot kick.

Dennis Mulholland headed a Corbett effort off the line 15 minutes from time but the former Kidderminster Harriers striker made amends in the 90th minute, stretching to divert a Matt Smith ball past Anstiss.

The dying seconds saw Reds go close to an equaliser, Nicky Clark's left wing cross being cleared from in front of goal by Hier with Peter Sutton poised on the far post.
