PLANS for celebrations to mark the June 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II were getting into full swing locally at this time 50 years ago.

The Journal explained that a special committee had been set up by Worcester City Council to plan the Coronation festivities which were to include an historical pageant by schoolchildren on Pitchcroft, to be followed in the evening by a fete and funfair and an illuminated boat procession on the Severn.

The Journal of 1953 reported too on a small county firm which was to have a graphic impact on Coronation celebrations in some parts of this country and a few places overseas.

"When the islanders of Barbados put up their Coronation decorations later in the year, much of their added splendour will have come from the workshops of a Worcestershire rural industry.

"Just over a year ago, Mr and Mrs R.H Bolton acquired the ancient Fladbury Mill on the River Avon and launched a business which they named 'Art in Industry' to provide commercial undertakings with attractive publicity in the way of displays, exhibition stands, posters and pictorial signs.

Orders

"They are currently concentrating on work for the Coronation celebrations.

"Orders worth thousands of pounds are already in hand, including those from municipal authorities such as Chester, Northampton, Weston-super-Mare, Oldbury and the Channel Island of Jersey."
