WORCESTERSHIRE were indebted to a brilliant catch by Gareth Batty to halt a rapid Nottinghamshire start in their Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy fourth round tie at Trent Bridge today.
Home skipper Jason Gallian won the toss and elected to bat, and he and fellow opener Guy Welton opened confidently against opening bowlers Matt Mason and Kabir Ali, taking the score to 51 in the 10th over.
But then Batty dived at square-leg to hold a fierce shot from Welton low down off Stuart Lampitt, who was declared fit after passing a test on a calf strain.
Welton was out for 26 and it gave long-serving Lampitt a wicket in his first over.
Usman Afzaal replaced Welton as Nottinghamshire took their total on to 53 for 1 after 11 overs.
The County were looking for their first victory over a first-class county in the competition since 1996, when they beat Glamorgan by 43 runs at Cardiff.
