FIREFIGHTERS who did not initially want to strike have been prompted to by the latest pay offer, claims a Worcester firefighter.

Leading firefighter Graeme Bishop said they were "fed up" and feeling "very undervalued".

"We see some very harrowing sights that don't go away," said Mr Bishop.

"I do have a conscience, but I have no other choice and nobody here wants to go on strike."

The strikes have been given the go-ahead after an independent review, chaired by Sir George Bain, recommended an 11 per cent package should be offered over two years.

In his report he said a four per cent rise should be awarded now, with seven per cent next year and changes in working practice would be brought in.

Schools throughout Worcestershire have been advised by the county council to check their drills and procedures.

A spokeswoman for Worcestershire Royal Hospital said the trust was focused on keeping patients, staff and visitors safe on the event of an incident.
