BORED teenagers in Stourport-on-Severn are being given the chance to have a go at challenging activities at the town's youth centre which is undergoing a facelift.

Young people, aged 13-19, have already tried out quad trekking, go-karting, archery, paintballing, abseiling, climbing, zip wire rides and orienteering.

And the Stourport Youth Centre - now known as Youthworcs Stourport - has had a new kitchen and plans to improve the entrance doors and toilets to make better access for the disabled.

The Windermere Way centre has received a £1,600 boost from Transforming Youth Work towards developments and has been promised funds from Communities Against Drugs.

Worker-in-charge Cath Round said the activities project was called Men on a Mission having been started by a group of boys at the centre - but was open to girls as well.

It is hoped to run the project for the coming year and to introduce more outdoor and watersports activities.

She said the new kitchen gave the opportunity to encourage young people to think about healthy eating, budgeting, shopping and food hygiene.

Beat manager PC John Harris has also been responsible for firing members' enthusiasm into playing five-a-side football matches.

"He's been wonderful, absolutely brilliant," said Ms Round.

The club is open on Mondays 7pm-9.30pm for 11 to 17-year-olds and staff are on hand on Thursday evenings to work with small groups on any projects which interest them.

New members are welcome and in particular any groups of young people who would like help with ideas.

Volunteer workers are also welcome and training is provided. Ms Round can be contacted at the centre on 01299 823430.
