BROMSGROVE Youth Organisation in New Road, looked set to be wound up and taken over by Worcestershire County Council after the founder, Major Ryland, had indicated that he intended to move away from the district. It was felt the facility would not be able to function satisfactorily without him at the helm. In 1945 the buildings, running track and playing field had cost £15,000.

FARMERS in the area were angry at a proposal by the Bromsgrove branch of the RSPCA to relocate its small animal destruction chamber from the police station to the Cattle Market for the convenience of the public. The farmers believed it could be a cause of spreading diseases.

AN appeal by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to district councils in the area for a £100 donation to ensure its survival was met with a flat "no" by councillors in Bromsgrove. Dismayed Labour councillor Bill Kings, who had proposed the motion, told colleagues at a council meetings it would have cost no more than a penny per head of population. He was moved to say: "Supporters of the parish pump orchestra have won."

PRICES charged by greengrocers in Bromsgrove High Street when set against those realised in the Market Hall when sold by auction had upset members of Bromgsrove Trades Council who reckoned consumers were being ripped off. It was said the mark up was as high as 900 per cent. However, many said housewives were to blame as they would cheerfully pay a shopkeeper 2/- (10p) for a 1/9 (9d) cauliflower they thought was better because it was dearer.

A CROWD of more than 3,000 gathered at the Rednal terminus at midnight on Saturday to see the last tram arrive before the service was withdrawn for good. Buses in future would convey passengers to and from the city centre along Bristol Road. Hundreds later converged on the trams in the depot to grab souvenirs.
