FRANK Fletcher from Staple Hill, found himself in front of Bromsgrove magistrates charged with using bad language in Marlbrook. He was fined a hefty 5/- (25p) plus 7/6 (37.5p) costs or in default 14 days' hard labour. The chairman of the bench, Mr White, remarked that this type of offence was becoming more frequent and in his opinion a fine of not less than £1 was more appropriate.

THE first of two groups of poor children from London's East End were coming to the end of a short say in the country at Wychbold. The children had been the guests of villagers who reported that they had been well behaved. The visits had been organised through a charity by Wychbolds' vicar the Rev Bates.

AUNT Anne's advice column for women in the Messenger contained a topical tip for anyone about to set off on a bike ride or on holiday. Always pack a jar of bicarbonate of soda and an old handkerchief. Made into a paste it could be applied to a troublesome patch of sunburn or prickly heat.

THE summer "treat" season was well underway in the Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa areas. A group of Sunday school pupils from chapels in Catshill, Fairfield, Bournheath and Lickey End in Bromsgrove headed by a brass band, marched to Mr Wood's field at Woodrow in Catshill for a tea followed by sports. The day ended with a fireworks display.

THE 13th Droitwich Horticultural Show attracted a good number of entries and visitors to the Brine Baths Park, courtesy of Dr Corbett. As usual at this annual event there was no shortage of visitors anxious to take a privileged look around the grounds, gardens and fernery at the nearby Impney mansion.
