A STOURPORT-on-Severn man who died following surgery at Worcestershire Royal Hospital this month was the victim of "hard luck", according to the county's coroner.

Walter Gamble, aged 65, of Bullus Road, was admitted to the Worcester hospital in January after coughing up blood.

An endoscopy revealed a large duodenal ulcer, which was subsequently removed.

Mr Gamble then suffered septicaemia, and was taken back to the operating theatre to check that the surgical procedures had been satisfactory.

Intensive care

After a long spell in the intensive care unit, Mr Gamble was transferred back to the ward on Tuesday, March 4, but the following day suffered a setback and died.

A post mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was bronchial pneumonia.

"This used to be called 'old man's friend," said Worcestershire coroner Victor Round.

"Lots of people died from this if they had had a bad ride.

"The real verdict is hard luck. It was not an accident."

Mr Round recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.
