A RETIRED carpet worker, who suffered from glaucoma and poor hearing, died after he stepped out in front of a car.

George Bickley, aged 83, had parked his car on the Stourbridge Road near the junction for Larkhill and Kidderminster, an inquest heard on Tuesday.

"He got out and tried to cross the road but walked straight into the path of a blue Mazda," said coroner Victor Round.

The coroner said there was no evidence to suggest the driver had been breaking the 30mph speed limit.

"We have no way of knowing if he was wearing his glasses before the accident," said Mr Round.

It was unlikely that Mr Bickley was wearing his hearing aid because a friend he had visited before the accident said he had to repeat himself several times to be heard, Mr Round said.

Mr Bickley, of Kingsford Lane in Wolverley, was treated at Worcestershire Royal Hospital after the accident at about 8.30pm on Thursday, October 3, but died the following day from multiple injuries.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
