A FUND set up in memory of a Bromsgrove man to support sports clubs and individuals is now up and running.

The Stuart Thompson Memorial Fund was launched after Stuart, also known as Scooby, died two years ago from an allergic reaction to an anaesthetic during a routine operation. The father of two was 28 when he died.

The fund has now appointed a working committee and is accepting applications.

Stuart's mum, Sue, said: "Stuart was such a keen sportsman. He always played football but he did athletics, fishing and swimming as well.

"When he died it seemed like setting up a fund to help other sports people was the right thing to do."

The fund is open to anyone who needs equipment or sponsorship to help them play sport, whether it's a new kit for a football team, new fishing equipment or just a bus pass to get to a training session. The committee will review applications and decide how to allocate funding.

To raise money for the fund, there will be a race night on Friday at Hoolahan's pub. A big screen will show American horse races and bets will be taken. Tickets are available from the Worcester Road pub for £3.

In August, the annual Stuart Thompson football tournament will be held at South Bromsgrove High School in Charford Road. It will include a family fun day and a disco in the evening.

If you are interested in applying for a grant send an stamped addressed envelope to Sue Thompson, PO BOX 6162, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire B61 7BR.
