police have welcomed the tough sentences handed out to a group of men who were caught in a violent fight outside a High Street pub.

The seven men pleaded guilty to a variety of assault and disorder charges following a fight outside the Golden Cross Hotel last October. Their case was heard at Worcester Crown Court on Friday, January 24.

After the men were dealt with Detective Constable Glyn Jones, of Bromsgrove Police, welcomed the ruling.

"These sentences send a clear message to others that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated and we will continue to target individuals who insist on behaving in a violent way," he said.

John Coleman, aged 24, of Leach Heath Lane, Rubery, received three years imprisonment. Craig Anthony Hinton, 19, of Quarry Walk, Rednal, was sentenced to three years in a young offenders institute.

Eighteen-year-old Michael Pailing, from Stourbridge Road, Bromsgrove, and Philip Mark Neason, from Leach Heath Lane, Rubery, each received two years at a young offenders institute. Sean Hurley, 18, from Gunner Lane, Rubery, received 21 months imprisonment.

Garry Lee Neason, aged 19, from Leach Heath Lane, Rubery, received 15 months imprisonment and Daniel Heath, from Maple Road, Rubery, 17, received a 12 month detention training order.

Mark Davey, 18, from Old Birmingham Road, was given a 200 hours community punishment order.

Police chiefs at West Mercia Constabulary, who recently published the draft for their joint policing plan for 2003/4, say they will continue to take a tough stance on anti-social behaviour.
