RURAL Affairs Minister Alun Michael's attempts to reassure people that fishing, shooting and horse racing (You Say, Friday, January 24) wouldn't be jeopardised by the Hunting Bill could be seen as a blatant lie.

He previously made a pledge to base any hunting legislation clearly on principle and evidence.

His stated intention of an honourable and fair solution appears to have been surrendered to party political expending.

With overwhelming evidence in favour of hunting given by vets and conservationists who contributed to all inquiries and previous consultations, the Minister has now conveniently excluded all economic, wildlife management and social benefits and still fails to produce the incontrovertible evidence he claims exist that hunting is cruel.

It's probably because more than 300 vets stated that the fox's killing is almost instantaneous.

A senior Minister who publicly shows he's untrustworthy only proves that other animal sports - including course fishing - can be attacked and makes a mockery of Alun Michael's own personal letter to your paper.
