I WAS very pleased to read that St Mary's Convent has been included in the top 100 schools (Evening News, Friday, January 24), but why oh why must Elgar Technology College yet again be mentioned alongside as one of the lesser performing schools?

The Convent is fortunate enough to have small classes. In fact, one year contains fewer than 30 pupils, while a typical state school may have 30 pupils per class.

Alongside the fees charged by the Convent, it would be inexcusable for this school to perform any worse.

I'm proud to be a parent of a pupil at Elgar College and I'm immensely impressed with the way the school has risen over the past few years.

Many Elgar students gain high GCSE results, but they all gain much more than that.

How can Elgar College ever be given a chance to gain new confidence when it's forever compared with schools such as St Mary's Convent? Perhaps this shows how unrealistic the performance tables really are.
