ROB McClean scored a hat-trick of tries as Droitwich Spa RFC First XV maintained their fine Midland Four West (South) record with an excellent 42-22 victory against Edwardians at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground last Saturday.

Matt Blackmore also played a significant part in what is Spa's fourth league win in a row by converting all Spa's six tries.

Playing with the wind in the first half, Droitwich began nervously, struggling to contain the driving forward play of the visitors.

But McClean then turned on the style by collecting a loose ball before beating five defenders to sprint over from 40 metres. Matt Blackmore added the conversion.

Shortly afterwards Blackmore intercepted a loose Edwardians pass to race in to double the advantage. The visitors hit back with a penalty and try.

But again McClean was on hand to round off a fine Spa move with his second try. And more good work by the tireless back row of Alan Brownlee, Gareth Knight and Jim McKeon set scrum half Lee Mortlock up to sell a cheeky dummy and score.

Winger Jamie Faulkener completed the first half scoring on his return to first team action.

Edwardians, with the wind on their backs, attacked in the second period but the Spa defence was well organised, and the visitors only managed two tries.

McClean burst clear for his hat-trick and last score and again Blackmore's difficult conversion was successful.

l Droitwich Seconds hammered Bromyard 74-3.

Steve Poke got two tries as did veteran Steve Bradbury and skipper Dean Evans. Man of the match was Dean Goddard.
